Events and Festivals at the End of the World

This mountain bike competition takes place in the town of Tolhuin, in the central area of the island. It is one of the most demanding races in the province, amidst the natural beauty of the Escondido and Fagnano lakes. Its 23rd edition will be held on February 26, 2023.

Following the traditional summer celebrations in the country, Ushuaia will host its own End of the World Carnival on 20-21 February. This event gathers locals and visitors on Maipú Avenue, where the parade will take place.

This mountain bike rally has two circuits that go through the Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve and the surroundings of Ushuaia. During the race, competitors must cross rivers, difficult slopes, peat bogs and trails. The rally will take place on 18-19 February 2023.

Labex is an event aimed to Latin-American filmmakers, both professionals and students of audiovisual arts, in which they can show their own productions and projects to a panel of specialists. The event will take place in Ushuaia on 28-31 March.

The Patagonian Saxophone Festival will take place in Ushuaia on 8-12 March 2023. The event gathers professional musicians and public, and offers workshops, classes, jams, and concerts. The Shepherd's Festival takes place every summer in the northern steppes of the island, in the Estancia El Roble, located 25 kilometers from the city of Río Grande. This event dates back to 1975, when a group of locals organized the first festival at Estancia Rubí. The goal was to celebrate the work of farmers and their faithful companions, the sheep dogs. Thanks to livestock farming, the Patagonian region and the island of Tierra del Fuego were able to develop. To carry out their work, the ranchers needed the help of dogs to herd and drive the livestock. Thus, the breeding and training of sheepherders became an essential activity.

The recognition of this combined effort between humans and animals, in the harsh conditions of the steppe, is the reason why the Shepherd's Festival became an event of great importance for the northern part of the island.

The contest summons both local and national shepherd's, and the local community and visitors gather to see the show while enjoying a traditional roasted lamb in the ranch "El Roble".

This year the 49 edition of the Festival will take place on 5th of March.

On 1st April a vigil takes place in Tierra del Fuego prior to the official act of commemoration for the Day of Veterans and Fallen of the Malvinas War.This vigil gathers relatives, military personnel and public to honor the memory of those who lost their lives in this conflict.

On April 2, the Day of the Veterans and Fallen of the Malvinas War is commemorated in the cities of Ushuaia and Río Grande. A vigil is held the night before, gathering military personnel, relatives and public. The commemoration of the fallen in the 1982 conflict is presided by government and military officials.

The goal of this festival is to promote the natural beauty of Ushuaia, as a way to make the destination an attractive location for international filmmakers.

The "Music from the End of the World" Fundation, created in 2012, organizes an annual Choir Festival that celebrates music, nature and culture in Tierra del Fuego. This event is also streamed on their YouTube channel.

The National Tourism Forum is an event that gathers members of the tourism industry of Argentina, to discuss and work on the development of the destination. This year Tierra del Fuego will be the host of this forum, that will take place on 23-24 May in the city of Ushuaia.

The Longest Night Festival takes place in Ushuaia every year to celebrate the beginning of the winter season. In the Southern Hemisphere the winter solstice occur on 21 June, and marks the longest night of the year.

The celebrations lasts for several days, with live shows, music and gastronomy in the snowy surroundings of Ushuaia. This year the event will be held on 13-23 June.

Since 1999 the "Cerro Castor" Ski Resort opened its doors to the community and from that moment the Instituto Fueguino de Turismo organizes the celebration of the winter arrival, because we love skiing, skating, snowshoeing, going for a walk in the winter resorts, tasting a typical lamb "a la estaca" or simply making a snowman. We have a Fuegian winter culture and we want this event to celebrate the emotions aroused by snow, ice and cold for everyone.

Furthermore, Cerro Castor, in commemoration of its opening anniversary, celebrates with the organization of a torch descent, carried by the instructors of its school and the sports schools of Club Andino Ushuaia, descending in the dusk by the main runway that reaches the base of the mountain, this moment marks the beginning of recreational activities, artistic shows and local gastronomy.

The pioneers of sheep farming, called by the then President Julio A. Roca, at the end of the 19th century, chose the northern area of Isla Grande to establish their estancias. Basically, the main reasons for this were the good pastures, plentiful rivers, sea coasts for the construction of a port and the proximity of the inter-oceanic route of the time, the Strait of Magellan.

As the population grew, a provisioning and services were necessary. Thus, Rio Grande, like all Patagonian cities, was born spontaneously and without an official foundation.

On July 11, 1921, the National Executive Branch signed the decree published in the Official Gazette with the number 8,209, by which the following towns were created in the National Territories: the agricultural, pastoral and mixed colonies listed, mentioning in the section corresponding to Tierra del Fuego "...colony of Río Grande, on the margin of the river of that name...".

Some landowners such as Nogueira, Menéndez and Braun, divided up all the land suitable for extensive cattle raising, maintaining a state of large estates until the agrarian reform of 1925. Thus, cattle raising became, in its beginnings, one of the economic mainstays of Tierra del Fuego.

This year Rio Grande will celebrate the 103rd anniversary of its foundation.

This event gathers the main distilleries with their best labels, and visitors can discover new products and flavors accompanied by musical shows, typical dances and a varied gastronomic offer.

The "Hermandad" Grand Prix is considered as the most important race in the Patagonian region since 1974.Passion, adrenaline and skill summarize this international competition of 826 kilometers that unites the cities of Rio Grande (Argentina) and Porvenir (Chile) in the month of August.The circuit crosses the harsh Patagonian landscapes, from the Atlantic to the Pacific Ocean, going through estancias (ranchs),sawmills and oil fields. Winter adds an extra level of difficulty to the race, and drivers must test their skills on the icy snowy roads.

The "MARCHABLANCA" is a traditional ski competition with more than 30 years of history, that gathers families, athletes, media and cross-country ski lovers from all over the world. Each edition gathers hundreds of participants divided by categories of 25 km and 7 km.

The USHUAIA LOPPET was born in 2011 as a result of the significant increase of high-level international participants in the MARCHABLANCA. This competition that gathers Wordloppet Skiers has become part of the World Circuit since 2014, with a classic 50 kilometers itinerary.

Another activity is the MINI MARCHABLANCA, an inclusive event for the children.

This year the event will take place on August 20.

This race is part of the international circuit Sport Do. The run is on snowy terrain, crossing forests, trails and mountains with a distance of 42 km, 21 km and 10 km. The date of the competition is on 26 August 2023.

Tolhuin was founded on October 9, 1972 by Territorial Law No. 31 under the Presidency of Alejandro Agustín Lanusse, the Government of Gregorio Lloret and the Municipality of Río Grande of Néstor Nogar, who were present at the laying of the foundation stone currently located at the intersection of Lucas Bridges and Luis Cárdenas streets. By Territorial Law Nº 72 of the same year, the current urban area of 54 Km2 was assigned to the city. That same year the construction of the first 20 houses and the building of the elementary school began.

On September 5, 1982 the first local delegate of Tolhuin, Mr. Alberto Vicente Ferrer, was appointed. The population of Tolhuin was approximately 250 inhabitants.

In 1991 Tolhuin was declared Commune, initial rank of the municipal regime of the Constitution of the Province of Tierra del Fuego, assuming the first elected Communal Council, on December 11 of that year.

On October 12, 1884, in Ushuaia Bay, the first Sub Prefecture was officially declared inaugurated in these territories, and from then on, every year the anniversary of our city is celebrated, reaching the first centenary in 1984.

This trail running event will take place in the Tierra Mayor Natural Reserve and will have different circuits that will go though forest, peat bogs and winter centers located in the valley. Dates to be confirmed.
