Near Tolhuin, the Fagnano Lake basin has a large number of affluents where it is possible to fish good specimens: the Yehuin and Yakush lakes, the Torito and De Los Renos bays, and the Milna, Tuerto and Valdéz rivers, among others. The sport fishing season is open from November to May.

The central region of the island is an ideal place to practice sport fishing and catch trouts in Lake Fagnano and its affluents, the Valdéz, Tuerto, Claro and Milna rivers.
There is also a number of deep lagoons with good specimens of salmonids, such as the Pescado, Sutherland, and Las Gemelas lagoons. Other great places to go fishing are the Laguna Negra, Laguna Varela, Laguna Bombilla, Laguna San Ricardo and Laguna  Margarita.

According to current legislation, only "Spinning" and "Flycasting" equipment is authorized.  In some places the catch and release is mandatory.  Therefore, it is important that all sport fishermen know the regulations for the season, in order to avoid fines.

Fishing in Yakush Lake

Yakush Lake is located within a Natural Reserve called "Corazón de la Isla".  In its surroundings, lenga and ñire forests predominate, as well as grasslands and peat bogs that contrast with the surrounding hills.  This lake is renowned for the quality of its trout.  The specimens range between 1.5 and 4 kg in weight, the average being 2 kg.
To get to Lake Yakush, you must travel along National Route 3 and when you reach the Estancia María Cristina, take Provincial Route 18. Then you must take Provincial Route 107  and drive for 13 kilometers until you reach the ranger station, which guards the entry to the reserve.

From the ranger station you must drive about 20 kilometers until you get to a parking area, and from there, take a 2.5 kilometers walk along an easy trail that leads to the lake.
By regulation, only flycasting with catch and release is allowed in Yakush Lake.  Navigation in boats powered by engines is forbidden.

Sport fishing license

For the practice of Sport Fishing in the environments under the jurisdiction of the province of Tierra del Fuego,  it is necessary to have a special permit which can be acquired in local Fishing Associations or Fly Shops.
Through the APP Pesca Deportiva - TDF (available for iOS and Android) you can check the points of sale to purchase the seasonal license, maps, authorized places, modalities, recommendations, and list of protected areas.

Clothing

Although the sport fishing season is open during the southern summer, the weather in Tierra del Fuego is unstable. For this reason, it's advisable to dress in layers, with waterproof and breathable clothing. Gloves, sunglasses and sunscreen are also recommended.  The rivers have no moss on the bottom, but a good pair of wading boots is a must.
