Surrounded by the Fuegian steppe, the Rio Grande basin concentrates the best rivers for fishing sea trout: the Rio Grande and the Rio Menendez. In this area, the average weight of the catch is around 7 kilos, although some trouts can weigh up to 15 kilos. This trout reaches large sizes because it spends most of its life in the sea, which provides a much richer source of food. Other species that can be caught in these rivers are rainbow trout, Chinook salmon and Farios trout.
In addition to the possibility of catching big specimens, anglers can find fishing lodges along the Rio Grande, that offer accommodation and an exquisite local gastronomy.
Sport fishing license
For the practice of Sport Fishing in the environments under the jurisdiction of the province of Tierra del Fuego, it is necessary to have a special permit which can be acquired in local Fishing Associations or Fly Shops.
Through the APP Pesca Deportiva - TDF (available for iOS and Android) you can check the points of sale to purchase the seasonal license, maps, authorized places, modalities, recommendations, and list of protected areas.
Clothing
Although the sport fishing season is open during the southern summer and the beginning of the autumn (November to May), the weather in Tierra del Fuego is unstable. Therefore, it is advised to dress in layers to cope with the temperature changes that may occur during the day. Warm, breathable and waterproof clothing is recommended. Sunscreen for the skin and sunglasses should also be used, since Tierra del Fuego has high levels of solar radiation during the summer.
