Driving through the provincial routes near the city of Río Grande will take you to the estancias, which are part of the local historical heritage. Located at the northern end of the island, some of them can be visited on your own, such as Estancia María Behety.  Although this place does not offer tourist services, visitors are allowed to photograph the main house of the estancia, and, during the shearing season, they can also observe the workers handling the cattle.

Other ranchs, such as Estancia Sara Braun, can be visited on guided tours offered by the Municipal Tourism Office at different times of the year.

The so-called "small estancias" are concentrated in the ecotone in the central area of the island ,where the landscape changes from steppe to forest and mountains. In this area, Estancia Las Hijas welcomes visitors, offering tours around the farmhouse, country activities and, of course, the chance to taste the typical Fuegian lamb roasted on a spit.

Besides these tours, visitors can also participate in traditional events of the Fuegian countryside, such as the Shepherd's Festival, which takes place in March. This festivity celebrates, through a contest, the work of the sheepdogs in herding the flocks.  For those who would like to watch the skills of sheperds and their dogs, this event is an excellent experience.
