Mitre Peninsula is located on the Eastern tip of the island of Tierra del Fuego and due to its archaeological and natural value it has been declared a protected reserve. It is the natural habitat of many species of birds and mammals and it also holds important testimonies of the past, such as archaeological remains that belonged to the native Haush tribes and remnants of shipwrecks occurred in the XIX century. Today it is possible to visit this place with guided tours that will take you in a long trekking trip that goes through the most emblematic spots and landscapes of the Mitre Peninsula.

These trips lasts between 7 to 14 days and the level of difficulty of the trek is high, which requires physical fitness. The Peninsula has a rough terrain and a damp weather, with constant cold winds that put to test the hikers resistance. That’s why is very important to be in good shape to face the challenges of the journey.

The tours depart from Ushuaia, and the starting point is the Estancia Moat, located at the end of the Route J.  From there, the hike goes through dense forests of guindos and canelos, peatbogs, beaver damps, rivers, lagoons, and rocky shores. Since there are no marked paths, the guides will lead you through cattle trails and rivers. The gravelly shores add some effort to the hike.

The itinerary will take you to places such as Cabo San Pío, where an old Navy lighthouse still stands, an abandoned gold dredge from early XX century, Sloggett Bay, where you can see the recent shipwreck of a Polish vessel called Nasachata, Playa Dorada, Aguirre Bay and Puerto Español. While you're hiking you can also see old cattle ranches and sawmills.

The return to Ushuaia is made from Slogget Bay or Puerto Español, depending on the tour itinerary. For more information, please contact the authorized tour operators.
