The fishing season in Tierra del Fuego begins this year on November 1st and ends on May 1st 2023. Professionals and amateurs from all over the world visit the island to practice this sport, in the Spinning and Flycasting (fly fishing) modalities, taking advantage of the long hours of daylight provided by the southern summer.
The varieties that predominate in the fresh waters of the island are brown trout, anadromous brown trout, rainbow trout, "brook trout" and king salmon or also called "Chinook". The so-called sea trout is one of the most sought after, as it can exceed 12 kilos in weight after feeding in salty waters.
The best areas for fishing are in the north and center of the province. Tierra del Fuego has three hydrographic basins: the Grande river basin in the north, the Fagnano lake basin in the central area of the island, and the Central Atlantic watershed to the east.
The rivers that flow into the Atlantic Ocean, such as the Grande, Menéndez, Irigoyen, San Pablo and Ewan Sur rivers, have gained fame among professional fishermen due to the quality and size of the specimens caught. Other rivers that stand out for their trout and bass are the Ladrillero, Láinez and Malengüena. Although the average weight of the salmonids that inhabit its waters are usually smaller than those of the Cuenca del Río Grande, there is the possibility of catching anadromous brown trout weighing 11 kilos or snook weighing up to 7 kilos.
Near Tolhuin, the most recommended places are Lake Fagnano and its tributaries (Valdez, Milna, Claro and Tuerto rivers) and the Palacio, Margarita and Bombilla lagoons.
In Ushuaia, the authorities of the Tierra del Fuego National Park have enabled fly fishing in this reserve. The authorized rivers are the Ovando and Lapataia. To obtain a fishing permit you must go to the National Park Office, located at 1395 San Martín Street.
Although the sport fishing season is open during the southern summer, the weather in Tierra del Fuego is unstable. Therefore, anglers are advised to dress in layers to cope with the temperature changes that occur during the day. Waterproof, breathable and removable warm clothes layers are the most recommended.
It is important to bear in mind that fishing in Tierra del Fuego is mostly catch and release. For the practice of Sport Fishing in the environments under the jurisdiction of the province of Tierra del Fuego, Antarctica and South Atlantic Islands, it is necessary to have a special permit. Registration can be done through the Sistema de Información de Pesca Deportiva (Sport Fishing Information System), the official site responsible for the authorization and commercialization of permits.
The APP Pesca Deportiva - TDF is also available for IOS and Android. In it you can check the points of sale to purchase the seasonal license, maps, authorized places, modalities, recommendations, and list of protected areas.
